Start with employee numbers and application demand, then review simultaneous usage. This business internet speed calculator uses a transparent planning model, rather than measuring your network. A site assessment should validate the result.
The model starts at 2.5 Mbps per employee. Video adds 15%, 35% or 65% and cloud applications add 10%, 30% or 60% to that base. Voice, cameras and guests receive separate allowances. Medium or high upload demand adds 15% or 30%; 25% headroom is applied before rounding up.
Bandwidth is the connection’s data capacity. Application experience also depends on latency, packet loss, upload capacity and congestion; a larger Mbps number alone does not resolve every problem.
Concurrent calls, screen sharing, cloud backups and large file transfers can compete for capacity. Meeting quality and application settings change demand. Consult Microsoft’s Teams network planning guidance and your application vendors before final engineering.
Local recording need not continuously use public internet bandwidth. This model assumes 2 Mbps per planning stream at 25% simultaneous internet activity, or 0.5 Mbps per camera. Unknown quantities use at least two cameras or one per ten employees. Validate remote viewing, cloud recording and retention arrangements separately.
Guest users receive a 0.5 Mbps planning allowance each; unknown guest counts default to half the employee count, rounded up. Voice uses 0.15 Mbps per employee with a 2 Mbps minimum. These assumptions should be adjusted after measuring actual usage.
Critical operations need a resilience review, separate from bandwidth. Assess independent backup internet, failover and route diversity. The calculator does not increase Mbps simply because business-critical operation is selected.
Premium Business Internet is the first option for general business use. Larger teams, demanding applications or critical operations can also compare Dedicated Internet Access (DIA). Coverage, interference, access-point placement and device capacity influence Wi-Fi. A Managed Wi-Fi assessment is a network-planning recommendation, not a separate advertised service here. Discuss requirements through Managed Network Support or a technical site survey.
Enter combined employee, guest and camera totals. The result is an aggregate planning estimate, not the same connection size for every branch. A multi-site assessment should distribute capacity and review each location’s applications, routing and resilience.
With the calculator defaults, the estimate rounds up to 500 Mbps. This includes high video, heavy cloud use, voice, CCTV, guests and 25% headroom. Different usage patterns will change the estimate.
It may suit some smaller offices. Assess simultaneous applications, upload demand and peak usage rather than judging only by employee count.
